What to do if you lose your house keys

Keys, we all hate to lose them. It can be terribly frustrating and potentially costly. Whether they be for the house or a car, keys are one of the most common misplaced or lost items.

On average, 25% of Americans misplace their keys at least twice a week resulting in over 20 million lost keys, yearly.

We can’t tell you how many times we get a call from customers who have been locked out of their homes because they can’t find their house keys.

It is stressful, no doubt, which is why we have come up with a full-proof guide on what to do if you lose your house keys.

How to search for your house keys?

The first thing to do is to not panic. That goes without saying. If you panic, you will most likely end up not thinking straight and ultimately make poor decisions.

The first thing to do is to obviously check your pockets, purse, or bag. Then search for them within your immediate vicinity.

Can’t find them? It’s important to stay calm. You will need to be for the next steps.

Retrace your steps – look for your house keys

Think about where you have been and where you could have left your house keys.

Retrace your steps all the way back to when you left the house. You will need to be systematic about it. That means, avoid searching the same spot frantically over and over again. It is a delicate balance between being thorough and swift.

Did you put them on a table during a meeting or meal?

Check the car – maybe it fell under the seats.

Where else did you go? Could it have fallen out of your pocket when you took your wallet or phone out? Think back hard and search those areas.

Sometimes it is where you least expect it. Other times, it’s exactly where you thought it was but glanced over it.

When you are in a panic, it’s quite common to do that.

Is there a spare house key somewhere?

Still no luck? The next thing to do is to see if you can locate a spare key. Perhaps you lent one to a neighbor or relative.

Try the district office as well. In some cases, they may have a spare or master key available.

You could have even left a spare under the mat or hid it in a flowerpot, but forgot about it.

Protip: keep car keys and house keys together. Loose keys are far easier to misplace.

Is there another way in?

There are more ways to get in other than the main door. Try the garage door, windows, or backdoor. Perhaps they were left unlocked.

If you are lucky, you can get in from one of them. But at the same time, be wary about this. Do not make it a habit. Leaving unchecked and unlocked entryways can be a huge risk to you and your home from outsiders.

This leads us to our next step or a “DO NOT DO”.

Do not try to open or break the lock yourself

Out of sheer desperation and panic, you may be tempted to break a window or try to open the lock yourself. We highly recommend you do not do this. It could really make matters worse.

It can cost you a lot more than just expenses for the damage and repairs. Someone might think you are a burglar and call the authorities. There is too much risk and hassle involved if you do this. You may even injure yourself trying to break in.

What about using DIY lockpicking tools? You ask. Well, you could give it a go but some locks are a lot more difficult than others to open. It requires a lot of patience and skillets. If you are not used to picking locks, it can be a stressful and strenuous task.

Call a professional locksmith

Now, you have tried everything. You haven’t found the keys, the spare, or able to unlock any side doors. There is only one thing to do. It is finally time to call a professional locksmith. Sure, you could have saved yourself the hassle and time from the previous steps and call one right away but we believe you should exhaust all other viable options first.

A professional locksmith provides all the services you need to get in your house, car, and even safes. Anything that has to do with locks and keys, they can do.

Install, repair, change. It is all part of their trade.

Calling a professional locksmith also gives you more options with not just lost house keys but they can also advise on lock upgrades or better security systems.

Think of locksmiths as doctors for your locks or mechanics for your car.

So far we have listed all the steps you can take if you have already lost your house keys. However, it goes a long way to prevent such things as well. Prevention is always better than reaction, we always say. So here are some measures you can take, beforehand.

Make copies of your house key

If you haven’t done so already, make copies of your keys and keep them with a trusted friend, relative, or neighbor so that you can collect them in case of an emergency.

Your local locksmith can do this easily.

This way you won’t be in this predicament again…unless your keys are stolen. In that case, you need to weigh in the possibility of changing locks. Again.

This is why you should look into keyless, smart locks. More on that in a bit.

Buy a key finder

Looking for house keys is a pain, no matter where you are. Instead of spending so much searching for them, there are plenty of smart trackers out there that can cut down that search time into a fraction.

Gadgets like Tile Mate or Chipolo (tags) are excellent for finding your items and work particularly well with keys.

All you have to do is attach one of them to your keys, sync it to your phone app and click the button that lets your track the tag. If it is nearby, it will ring (and it works the other way too – you can use the tag to find your phone). All you have to do is listen for the ring and find it.

If your tag and keys are not nearby, the tracker lets you know where you had it last.

How awesome is that!?

Consider installing a smart lock

This is 2021. It is the decade of impressive technology and there are tons of better options for your home lock and security systems.

So, ditch the lock and key and opt for a smart lock.

What’s a smart lock?

Also known as digital locks or electronic locks, smart locks do not require physical keys. Depending on the brand and style, they are operated via a digital keypad or wirelessly through an app.

They have a ton of benefits such as:

  • Easy accessibility
  • Customizable security
  • Variety
  • You can throw away keys and never worry about losing them

There is also another reason why you need to think about installing a smart lock. Let’s say you already lost your keys. Maybe they were stolen. That poses a huge security risk to your home. You will need to change your locks so might as well make it a smart lock.

The same goes for your spare keys – if you lost them, it is reason enough to change or upgrade the locks for your security.

It is true, a smart lock might cost more, but in the long run, it is more beneficial. You won’t have to keep changing locks every time you lose a key. And smart locks are just cooler, don’t you think?

Now, while there are plenty of DIY smart locks out there, if you really want to secure your house and have it done well, call a professional locksmith to install one for you.
